No one can deny the appeal that animated films have. People, no matter what the age, cannot help but fall in love with the entertaining and colorful world of these creatively-made animations.

From the first animated film named Fantasmagorie by Emile Cohl in 1908, animated films had come a long way and with families as their target audience, it has proven that it is a profitable film genre industry. Here are the top five highest grossing animated films of all time.

1. Frozen

Despite being released just last year, Walt Disney Pictures’ Frozen claims the top spot of the highest-grossing animated film of all time with its earnings amounting to $1.143 billion.

Frozen has won two Academy Awards and 1 Golden Globe award. The story follows the adventure of Princess Anna with Kristoff, his reindeer named Sven and Olaf, a snowman to find Queen Elsa, Anna’s sister who fled after putting the whole kingdom into eternal winter with her powers.

2. Toy Story 3

Who doesn’t love the Toy Story series? Everyone has loved the story of Andy and his sincere attachment to his toys particularly Woody and Buzz Lightyear.

The movie has the position of the second-highest-grossing animated film of all time with its worldwide gross of $1.063 billion.

The story started with Andy preparing for college and putting all of his toys, except for Woody, in a box to be stored.  His mom mistakenly thought that it was for the garbage pickup. Thinking that Andy wanted to throw them away, the toys climbed in a box for Sunnyside Daycare. It is now up to Woody to correct the misunderstandings and help his fellow friends from the evil lurking in Sunnyside Daycare.

3. The Lion King

Even after 20 years, The Lion King has retained its spot as one of the most popular and highest-grossing animated films of all time.

To prove its popularity, it has earned a total of $987.4 million and won one Golden Globe and two Academy Awards.

The story revolves around Simba, a young lion that after his father died, was blamed for his father’s death and was forced into exile. After some years, Simba challenges his uncle Scar to get his rightful position as the king back.

4. Despicable Me 2

Universal Pictures’ Despicable Me 2 has stayed true to the success of its predecessor, Despicable Me, and has earned $970.7 million.

Despicable Me 2 is about how Gru helps the Anti-Villain League (AVL) to find who stole the PX-41, a powerful mutagen while taking care of his three adopted kids (Margo, Edith, and Agnes) and falling in love with AVL agent Lucy Wilde.

5. Finding Nemo

With $936.7 million worldwide gross, this 2003 animated film takes the spot as the fifth highest-grossing animated film.

The story revolves around Marlin, an overprotective clownfish, who lost his son, Nemo, to humans and went in search of him along with Dory, a regal tang. The film tells us the story of a father who will overcome any obstacles and do anything to save his son.

The strong love of a father to his son was what viewers love about this film and at the 2004 Oscars; Finding Nemo has won the award for Academy Best Animated Feature.

Animated films have earned a soft spot in the hearts of many with its colorful and creative designs, witty dialogues, heart-wrenching stories, and valuable life lessons. It is not surprising that these films are popular because sometimes, it is nice to let the inner child in all of us come out.
